Escape to the country for a rural break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday twenty-first century life and retreat into glorious seclusion in the Wye valley. Surrounded by stunning views, Shadowlands is a beautiful, spacious holiday barn close to the river Wye and surrounded by meadow and ancient woodland.
The barn has a spacious open plan sitting area with a wood burner and a dining area with views across the valley. There is a fitted kitchen with a dishwasher, washing machine, freezer and microwave, A cloakroom and downstairs WC. The barn has an open staircase to the first-floor. Upstairs there are two double en-suite bedrooms and a bedroom with twin beds plus a bathroom with a shower over the bath.

The 300 year old barn and the surrounding landscape was featured in the award winning 1994 film Shadowlands. Directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger this award winning film is a beautiful, gentle story about the life and loves of Narnia author C.S. Lewis. The Shepherds Hut and the LuxHut is on-grid which provides hot water for showers, cooking and lighting. This is a perfect glamping hoilday experience for romantic couples as well as families. Children can run free and enjoy a wild countryside holiday. Couples can relax, surrounded by nature and enjoy an intimate time together with not a soul to disturb you. Everyone can enjoy star gazing, leaping into the river, walking, fishing, cycling... there's something for everyone. Bird watchers will love being close to Symonds Yat and the peregrine falcons. You can simply stay put and enjoy this beautifully peaceful back-to-nature environment. During lambing season you might enjoy helping Farmer Donna with her day-to-day jobs .
glamping it up in a shepherds hut
The Shepherds Hut has a comfortable double bed and a set of bunk beds, a wood burner with a basket of logs (more logs available to buy). Bed linen is optional - you can bring your own, or we can provide bed linen at an extra cost of £15 per night. On arrival guests can go straight to the hut, they will be given directions and access code to the field at the time booking is confirmed. The hut is on a working farm with cows, sheep and horses. There is room to park one car close to the hut for easy unpacking/packing.

The LuxHut is discretely located just behind the Shepherds Hut. This is where you will find the kitchen two showers and two (you'll love this...) flushing loos.

Mobile reception is patchy so you've got a great excuse to be out of contact with the office! There's a fire-pit with a tripod and cookware for outdoor cooking as well as wooden outdoor furniture and a hammock.
dogs, kids, friends...or maybe not!
We highly recommend you bring your wellies, walking boots and a torch. You're welcome to bring up to two well-behaved dogs at a charge of £25 per dog. We do allow dogs inside the huts but because there are sheep, deer and pheasants in the area (and it's unfenced) dogs must be kept on leads whilst outside. Farmers live nearby and the farm office is manned during office hours in case of need or advice
The Shadowlands estate and accommodation is available to hire for film, advertising, corporate events, small festivals or gatherings.
The award winning 1993 movie Shadowlands was filmed in the barn and just metres away from the Shepherds Hut. Richard Attenborough (director), seen here on Symonds Yat rock above the Wye Valley, and the film crew used many shots of this beautiful area for the film.
The early Harry Potter films were also used for the stunning rural location.

Here are some of our favourite places and things to do in and around the area.
The Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean is the perfect place to explore nature and the great outdoors. A walker's paradise this designated area of outstanding beauty (AONB) has many designated walking trails including The Wye Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke. Cycling and canoeing are alternative ways to explore the area. There are waterside pubs and restaurants nearby in Symonds Yat and Lydbrook. The old market towns of Ross on Wye and Monmouth just 6 miles away. The Malvern Hills and the Cotswolds are also within easy reach.
Shadowlands is a delight to visit at any time of the year. In springtime, visitors can walk amongst the colourful spring flowers and in late April - early May the bluebells in the woodlands make a breathtaking sight. In summer guests can enjoy the forest in all its green glory and the river Wye at it's most sparkling. Autumn brings a swathe of golden and russet colours throughout the Wye valley and wintertime is best for cosy log fire evenings after a bracing walk in the atmospheric winter wonderland of the forest tracks.
There are some good local pubs nearby serving great food, locally brewed Wye Valley ales and delicious artisan ciders from Wales and Herefordshire. One of our favourite pubs is The Saracens Head which is a brisk 30 - 40 minutes walk away.
The river Wye is just a run down the hill and fishing is available on request. Canoeing and mountain bike hire facilities are nearby.
There are a number of golf courses nearby to Shadowlands including: Forest Hills Golf Club, The Bells (Forest of Dean Golf Club), Monmouth Golf Club, Ross on Wye Golf Club and The championship Rolls Golf Club. A twenty five minute drive will take you to The Celtic Manor championship golf resort.
We are 20 minutes drive from the market town of Monmouth and 30 minutes drive from the picturesque Forest of Dean and Sculpture Trail. Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey are 30 minutes drive away.
